School of Rock – Day 14 – Voice, Preparation, and Presentation

SUMMARY

Today I didn’t do too much that I don’t normally do. I recorded my final recording for the final and I watched music theory and music analysis youtube videos.

LEADERSHIP ACTIVITY

  • EVERYONE: Link to your final project HERE!
First take (really bad) (Don’t play)
Finished recording (less bad) (ignore the wrong note I played at :48)

Feedback: Sounded good slowed.

Leadership Project (SMART Goal Evidence)

  2. Embed media as evidence of your completed work (SHOW)
  3. Write what you completed. Write it as if the person reading has no idea what you were working on for the past week. (TELL)

What I did for my leadership project is I covered the intro section of Creep by Radiohead. The intro is 8 bars and did it over 5 days adding 2 more bars each day. Once I got the new set of bars down I played it with the last set of bars until I could play the whole thing.

PRACTICE ROOM (GUITAR LESSONS)

I went over Creep again. I also went over some of the other little songs I learned throughout the weeks so I made sure I still knew them. Played them all pretty well so I stopped practicing early because I don’t have much else I want to practiced till class ended tomorrow.

CLASSROOM (THEORY & ANALYSIS)

https://youtube.com/watch?v=uDDeves6Crs%3Ffeature%3Doembed

First I watched an Adam Neely video about Benedetti’s music puzzle and how due to just intonation it is mathematically impossible to play correctly repeatedly. I also watched some Adam Neely QnA videos seeing him explore various music ideas and topics. Then I watched a video of Adam Neely and Jeff Schneider looking at viewer sent musical pieces and talking about how they could improve them. Mr Le Duc took the headphones so I can’t watch anymore videos.

Great presentations have many ingredients from the structure of the visuals to the delivery. But what makes it all work from voice, eye contact, word choice, body language, the visuals used, etc. Let’s take a look at the act of successfully presenting or pitching an idea to reveal these ingredients.

Song Analysis Tools

I finished watching a video responding to a take that Rick Beato had that older music is better than newer music because it’s more complex and the person that made the video talked about why he disagreed. Next I watched Rick Beato talked about a coldplay song highlighting its melodic structure and just showing the song off in general. Then I watched a Rick Beato video talking about an improv piece that Oscar Peterson did live where he went there all the different kinds of Jazz and Rick says it to be the greatest solo of all time. Then I watched a Rick Beato video about guitar in the 90s mainly highlighting rock and metal and their respective sub-genres. Then Rick Beato went over his list of top 20 keyboard intros. Then I watched a video Adam Neely and some other youtubers did where they remade classic kids song using more advanced music techniques as a way to introduce the topics to kids. After that I watched Adam Neely talk in depth about music copyright and music as property. Then I watched an Adam Neely talk about the white supremacy in the history of music theory and highlights eastern parts of music.

Music Machine Songwriting “System”

I watch a video about Celine Dion hitting the High E flat in All By Myself and the key change that follows. I also watch a video about the weirdness in the composure of The Girl From Ipanema and learning a little about the history of Samba and Bossa Nova and its relation to American Jazz. Then I watched an Andrew Huang video about how the supertonic relates well with any chord and that being why its so prominent in pop music. I watched another video of Rick Beato when he analyzed Bohemian Rhapsody and also interviews Brian May. Next video I watched was about how people feel rhythm and how we feel really fast and really slow rhythms and how it all leads back to the indifferent rhythm of about 100 bpm. Next I watched a video of Adam Neely who is a jazz musician trying to play more metal style music and highlighting the differences in style. They had another video of Rob Scallon who does metal music and he does jazz music. Then I found a ted talk that Adam Neely did about personal language in music.

School of Rock – Day 9 – Workflow

SUMMARY

I spent a lot of time watching Rick Beato music analysis videos and practicing the song I’m going to cover for the final project.

PRACTICE ROOM (GUITAR LESSONS)

Today I practiced the first 3 lines of the intro to Creep by Radiohead. I tried playing at the normal bpm of the song at 93 but it was too fast with all the eight notes in the beginning so I slowed it does to 35 playing the eights like quarter notes. I also just noodled around on guitar and bass just playing stuff I thought sounded cool.

CLASSROOM (THEORY & ANALYSIS)

Music Machine Songwriting “System”

I found how simple musically Adele’s Rumor has it is. Adele’s blues style singing with Motown inspired instrumental was really good. I also watched a video about Minerva by Deftones. Chino Moreno’s vocal capability is really impressive and the guitar lines on that song are really good too. I also watched another Rick Beato video about the complexity of Never Gonna Let You Go by Sergio Mendes for it being a #1 hit pop song. Rick talks about the songs many key changes and its weird chord progression.

OUTSIDE (CREATIVITY & THE BRAIN)

I love hearing people give their own takes on human society and purpose and I found his very interesting. What he said about stimuli and shower thoughts coming from the lack of this stimuli really intrigued me because I am very often listening to some form of podcast or video essay and I do find I think more in depth thoughts when I remove those factors.

STAGE

  • We will work on MusicWill.org materials when ‘on stage’.
  • This is the performance room.

Watched a documentary on Motown.

WHAT I LEARNED and PROBLEMS I SOLVED

A problem I had today was I couldn’t listen to audio through my red box. I fixed this problem by looking up my issue in google and watching a video of someone with the same issue solve it.
